The Science Behind the Platelet Rich Plasma Facial

A platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facial is a cosmetic procedure that involves drawing blood from your arm, separating out the red blood cells, and then injecting the platelet-rich plasma back into your face via microneedling.

This procedure was first popularized when Kim Kardashian had it done on TV in 2013 but what are the scientific benefits of injecting blood into your face?

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

What can I expect during my PRP Facial?

Isolating & Activating PRP From Your Blood

To harvest the platelet-rich-plasma or PRP, 10cc of blood is drawn from the arm into a specialized tube and spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelets and their growth factors from the rest of the blood products.

Injecting PRP Into Your Face

Then approximately 4cc of PRP are injected back into the face, focusing on problem areas such as nasolabial folds and undereye area. The remaining 4cc of PRP are applied during a full face microneedling procedure. Microneedling involves puncturing the skin with a multiple surgical needles to induce collagen production and improve the skin's texture. When combined with PRP, microneedling also infuses the entire face with growth factors via the microscopic channels created by the needles.
